Healthy habits

Habits are the automatic behaviours we find ourselves engaging in everyday. Habits includes simple things like morning routines, after work naps, or my personal favourite – going to the kitchen for a snack and forgetting the remote there. Perhaps you want to develop healthy habits around daily routines, exercise, food, school, relationships, or work. Ultimately, developing habits will help you reach long-term goals while simultaneously showering you with benefits to emotional and physical health.

Habits also include responses that are more complex like becoming defensive in situations that trigger old memories. For example, maybe you find yourself becoming upset with a current partner who wants to go out with friends because a previous relationship was infringed upon by infidelity.

The human mind is a wildly amazing thing – we often develop complex habits and automatic responses to protect ourselves. On the other hand, even though our minds are pretty good with creating survival habits, unlearning those habits when they become problematic and replacing them with new ones often takes more work. That’s where psychotherapy and talk therapy comes in.

Working towards habits

You are capable of building healthy habits. Regardless of what you want to work on, you are the priority in any work we do together. We will take a look at what is and is not working in your life. We will look at the routines your body has liked thus far and identify their purpose. We may consider how such routines became a staple, and see what strategies can be applied to develop and maintain new routines and habits in other parts of your life.

Habits are tend to develop when paired with reward. Your body and mind thrive off knowing they are doing well. Rewards signal such responses and release that feel-good hormone we hear so much about – dopamine. In our work together, we will use evidence-based strategies to get you to where you want to be.
